A very important procedure in the cultivation of grapes is the implementation of its tying. To date, there are a large number of ways to tie the grapes. Each gardener independently chooses the most convenient and optimal option. However, when carrying out such an event, some biological characteristics of grapes should be taken into account, as well as the requirements imposed by the technology of growing vines must be observed.
What is a grape garter for?
Garter of the vine is carried out in order to obtain a good harvest and improve the quality indicators of the fruit. The correct location and fixing of mature shoots of the plant improves the germination of young shoots, and also ensures the uniformity of their growth and development. Besides, Garter of grapes is necessary to protect cultivated plants from gusts of wind and serves as a guarantee of reducing the risk of damage to various diseases, the appearance of which is often provoked by thickening of landings with an insufficient level of ventilation. Thanks to the green garter, all varieties and hybrid forms of grapes are much better pollinated by insects.
Tapener: purpose and characteristics
A tapener for garter of grapes is a very convenient modern tool to use. In recent years, this device has become very popular and in demand among gardeners and gardeners and is widely used for fast and high-quality garter not only of the vine, but also of plants such as tomatoes, cucumbers, as well as for the design of decorative hedges.
A device for tying plants tapener, or teypner, is a fairly new agricultural tool. It was developed by leading engineers from Japan, and since 2012 it has become available to gardeners in our country.
The main advantages of using this tool during the plant binding procedure are as follows:
- one tying operation takes no more than a second;
- you can use the tool with one hand;
- the tool is convenient to use regardless of the height of the plant to be tied;
- very easy and quick replacement of work staples and tape;
- it is possible to use components of different colors, which increases the decorativeness of plantings;
- the tool has a small weight and size;
- Using tapeners is easy thanks to the attached clear instructions.
The used garter material is designed to fix the plant, carrying out dry garter of grapes. The special elasticity of the material completely eliminates the formation of constrictions in the process of tying.
Tapener: plant stapler
How to use tapener
The principle of using the tapener is very simple and has some similarities with the principle of operation of a standard clerical stapler, and the main difference is the use of a tape automatically fed and held by the device for operation.
Instructions for using the teipner for gartering grapes:
- Open the cover on the teipner housing.
- Refill the tape, bringing its end closer to the special distribution channel.
- Bend the tape supplied from the tool up and stretch it about a centimeter into a special groove, which is located on the metal part.
- The tool should be placed in the hand with the lever up.
- Press the small handle and pull out the long spring, equipped with a special pin for feeding the brackets.
- Insert the staples into the vacant space with the point up and return the spring to its original position until it clicks.
The device thus prepared for operation should be brought to a plant requiring fixation. The tape is brought to the vine and as a result of feeding the device forward wraps it. After pressing the lever, the bracket punches the tape, the plant is fixed, and the mechanism cuts the fastening material at the required distance.
Other tools for tying grapes to trellis
Gardeners use a variety of materials for gartering grapes, including wire, rope, twine, PVC braid (cambric), rags, film from video or audio tapes. It is convenient to use an elastic thread for tying, which does not limit the growth of a fixed shoot.
The main conditions for proper tying are the immobility of the fastening and the free space around the shoot, which will ensure unhindered growth of the vine. In order to avoid pinching the shoots, it is recommended to use special tools, such as a teipner, or a garter cord and scissors for knitting loops. The ropes are made of steel wire wrapped in paper.
Both dry and green garters should be performed by the "eight", first wrapping the binding material around the trellis wire, and then fixing the vines. This feature of the garter protects the shoots from chafing during growth and prevents the plant from getting burns from wire heated in the sun.

Growing grapes without garter
Of course, the binding of grapes and its green shoots has a beneficial effect on the development of the plant and stimulates the formation of an abundant quality crop. However, quite often recently cultivated grapes without the use of garter.
With this method of growing grapes, only one support is installed with two corners welded to it. In the spring, after the plant is released from winter shelter, the vine must be carefully thrown over the upper welded corner without using a garter. A second welded corner is needed to shelter the plant for the winter.
The basis of this method of growing is the correct formation of a grape bush. In the first year, only one, very powerful, shoot should be formed, which should have a length of 1 meter and is cut into six buds in the autumn. The next year, you should leave a couple of the topmost buds, of which two well-developed shoots will form by winter, and the lower shoot is formed into a knot of substitution with a pair of buds. From the shoot located at the top, you need to form a fruit arrow for six kidneys, which will allow you to get a fruit link. The following year, with autumn pruning, it is required to leave the fruit arrow and a knot of substitution for a couple of buds. For a well-developed plant, it is allowed to form another fruit link.
Despite the emergence of alternative methods of growing grapes, most gardeners prefer the traditional method, involving the tying. Among the numerous devices for grape garter, the most functional device is currently the stapler-tapener. This modern device makes it possible to carry out high-quality, quick and easy garter of the vine with effective fixation in the most correct position.
How to tie up grapes
Tapener is perfect for tying young and green grape shoots, and the procedure is not accompanied by damage to the plant. As a rule, the cost of such a device varies significantly depending on the manufacturer, but even the simplest option can hardly be called a budget. It is for this reason that tapener is still not actively used by Russian gardeners engaged in homemade viticulture.
